How was it?
Food: 7.5/10

On our way to check out Vivid Sydney, I spotted Sushi Tei. We had originally planned to eat at The Rocks markets, but it was sooo cold, and any indoor area looked really good at that moment! There’s so many Japanese restaurants in the city, it’s quite hard to choose which one to go to, and we normally end up just going to the same ol’ places that we always go to! I had heard mixed reviews about Sushi Tei, so I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but it looked so warm and inviting, so we decided to give it a go.  It is part of a chain of Japanese restaurants which originated in Singapore.

Green Tea

The menus are glossy and ginormous; very pretty, but a little bit difficult to flip through. Some green tea was ordered and instantly warmed us up. I noticed that there were quite a lot of tourists dining here, probably due to the proximity to The Rocks, Opera House and Circular Quay.

Edamame $3.80

The edamame came out first and we were pleasantly surprised that they were still warm. They were lightly salted and are always great to munch on whilst waiting for more food to arrive.

Asama (Tuna, Salmon, Kingfish Sashimi) $14.80 (4 pieces of each kind)

The Asama is three different types of sashimi, including tuna, salmon and kingfish. You can choose to have three, four or five pieces of each. We chose to have four pieces of each kind, which was just enough. The favourite was the kingfish sashimi, which was super fresh and melt in your mouth delicious.

Salmon Mentaiko Roll $10.80

From the specials menu, we ordered the Salmon Mentaiko Roll. This was a salmon, spicy cod roe and avocado roll. It was all kinds of awesome with the gooey mayo and spicy cod roe, the lightly seared salmon on top and the fresh rice and avocodo – I loved the combination and the different textures; I would definitely order this one again!

Sukiyaki Premium Wagyu Beef $18.80

Because it was freezing cold, we decided that a hotpot was needed. Stat! We ordered the sukiyaki premium wagyu beef hotpot, which came with beancurd and vegetables in a soy-based soup. There were thin slices of raw wagyu beef, which we dipped into a raw egg, and then dunked into the soup. I think we won’t order the wagyu next time because we found it a little bit tough (perhaps we dunked it for too long), but overall the soup was lovely with just a hint of sweetness, and provided much needed relief from the cold!

Tezukuri Youkan To Ice Cream $4.80

Yes, so I know I just wrote about how I needed hotpot because it was so cold, and now you’re looking at ice cream. But, I’ve always been an ice cream girl, regardless of season and weather. So I ordered he Tezukuri Youkan To Ice Cream for dessert, which was green tea ice cream with sweet red bean jelly. I really liked the red bean jelly as it was quite light and overall a refreshing end to our meal.

Overall:

I was pleasantly surprised by Sushi Tei. The food and service we experienced were great and the prices were fairly reasonable. I’d definitely go back for that salmon mentaiko roll (that was so good!), and it’s a fair alternative when you’re in the mood for some good quality Japanese fare in this part of the city.

I haven’t been to Sushi Tei for ages, as last time I went was not very good. But it looks like we’re due for another visit – the ice cream and red bean jelly looks delicious even in winter!

Yep, I can eat icecream in any weather too! My favourite is a giant affogato yes in these low temperatures! I work very close to this place so thanks for the review, definitely worth investigating.

  12. Ever since coming across mentaiko a couple of years ago, it has become a love of mine. And that red bean jelly looks interesting – smooth or with bits of red bean studded through it?

  13. Hooray for any-weather ice cream consumption :D

That salmon mentaiko roll looks awesome! The seared salmon has the appearance of pork crackling, hehe.

  14. i’ve been to sushi tei about 6 times now and have liked it. it’s reasonably priced and decent for a food option around that area. otherwise you’d have to head to chinatown, oxford st or stanley st to find other affordable places to eat around the city area.

    s :-)
