Chicken Satay (Sate Ayam) $11.00
Shalom is one of my favourite cheap eats that’s easily accessible and serves some awesome chicken satay. I discovered Shalom’s Kingsford branch whilst I was in uni, and really loved their chicken satay. Nowadays when I need a fix, I head to the branch on Broadway. There’s easy parking in front of the restaurant (at certain times), on the side street or at Broadway shopping centre. An order of chicken satay is always a must for me. The chicken is juicy and has a wonderful charcoal flavour. The sauce is peanuty, sweet and sour – just the way I like it. You get 5 pieces for $11.00.
Grilled Chicken with Balinese Sauce (Ayam Bakar Bali) $9.00
The grilled chicken with balinese sauce also comes with one boiled egg (great, I love my eggs!). The chicken has a wonderful charcoal flavour, however the balinese sauce is extremely hot. (There are little pictures of chilli on the menu to indicate how hot a dish is). We didn’t realise it would be that hot, and we struggled to eat a lot of this despite how tasty it was. So it’s definitely for somehow who can handle a lot of heat!
Water Spinach with fresh chilli sauce (Kangkung Shalom) $7.00
Another super chilli dish is the water spinach with fresh chilli sauce. It’s always nice to have some greens to accompany all the meat and heavy sauces, however this is another one for the chilli fiends out there!
Rice
Rice is provided alongside most of the meat dishes. It’s great with chicken satay, and great to quench the heat with some of the super hot dishes!
Mushroom Chicken Noodle with Beef Ball (Mie Ayam Jamur+Baso) $9.00
The mushroom chicken noodle comes with two beef balls in a clear soup. It’s perfect for a quick lunch/dinner and I enjoy the mushrooms and wished there was more. A simple yet satisfying dish.
Shalom Bottled Water $1.00
Overall:
Shalom is always good for a quick meal. The service is friendly, food is reliable and tasty and it’s great for the wallet! I think the best part for me is the fact that it’s so convenient and their chicken satay will keep me going back for more!

Ahh, those cheap uni eating places stay with you forever! The satay looks stunning!
The chilli sauce contrasted with the water spinach is very striking but I’m worried by how lethal the sauce looks!
It seems like a really good value, and there’s definitely a good amount of sauce on those skewers!
Mmm that chicken looks tasty! I love my eggs too
Loving the masses of chilli, I’m a total chilli fiend!
I’m loving your cheap finds, this place looks delicious!
That Balinese chicken looks very tasty, and having some satay sticks on the side is an inspired idea for a quick feed. Why ever go to McDonalds.
nice selection of food there! I feel like nawing on some of that chicken at the moment
Always love a good satay chicken! Mmm looks tasty!
Gimme some of the Ayam Bakar Bali hold half the chilli though! I love shilli but not too hot!
I had the Grilled Chicken with Balinese Sauce before and I remember that it is not the hottest one but I was eating with tears..haha….super spicy ! Have to try the satay soon. (Shalom, Ultimo is 1 min from my house..hehe)
