Pho Dac Biet

The past week was insanely busy for me as I had my cousin visiting from overseas. As she only had one week here, we were determined to eat as much as possible! You can see some pics of what we ate during our week of feasting over at my facebook page or by clicking here.

I had to take her to Cabramatta to try some of Sydney’s finest and most authentic south east Asian cuisine. I found out that Pho 54 had just recently reopened (thank god!), and so I decided pho was the order of the day (followed by avocado shakes and pandan waffles – I love Cabra!)

We ordered a ‘small’ bowl of pho dac biet each. I am a fan of the combination of slimy tripe, tendons, brisket and big fat meatballs :) If you are not a huge fan of the tendons, tripe etc., there are many other variations available including pho tai which contains only beef fillets. My family and I love Pho 54, as we have been frequented this small eatery for quite a while, so I do have a soft spot for it. The broth is aromatic and flavoursome and the noodles are lovely and thick.

Pho is perfect for winter (or any season really!). Pho 54 is always good for a satisfying and cheap meal in Cabramatta. Even though I love Pho 54, I must say my preference is  leaning towards Pho Bac Hai Duong as I prefer the sweeter broth, but both are still winners!

  1. My husband tends to order pho dac biet and I steal little tastes of the selection from his bowl. I love how the tripe is so thinly sliced and crunchy!

  2. Oh god, slimy tripe and tendons. I’m so glad you were able to sate your offal desires but I just can’t share your excitement for it. Avocado shakes and pandan waffles though? I’m there with bells on!

  3. Yeah! Pho with everything. thats the only way I eat it! I really like this place too. And I don’t care that the decor is old and run down. I love it for the way it is. I hope they never renovate.

  4. Steph says:

Mmm the tripe is my favourite bit! Can’t wait to have pho this week!!!!

  5. Looks delicious & I love the last pic! Cabra’s great!

  6. Mmmmm, never met a tripe I liked, but the pics are great and the week long eat-a-thon is right up my street. Love Cabramatta’s eateries too, the food you have when you haven’t got time to jet away to the real thing. :)

Man after yesterday I have to go cabra for a feasting!

  8. Gotta make my way out there. Sounds like there are so many great eats in the area, with this one to be another consideration.

  9. I’m not a fan of slimy tripe :P
I stick to sliced beef or beef and chicken. man it’s been ages since I had pho!

  10. Your title picture is my idea of Heaven! Its really made my day. Great blog.

Don’t shoot me but I somehow am not that huge of a fan of pho. I enjoy a bowl every so often but maybe because mum cooks it so so frequently at home my taste buds get a little bored. A good warming bowl of pho would be good right now though as the warm sunshine has just turnbed into horrible wet and grey.

  12. I have only been to Cabramatta once! Too bad I live too far away (2 hours round trip)! Must visit one day to try out this famous pho!

  13. Your pics of pho is soooo good, Betty – it’s hard to take a pic of pho that makes it taste nice, good work.

  14. I absolutely adore Pho!!! Its one of those childhood foods where I must satisfy the withdrawls every now and again or I just go crazy… ohh and how I miss Cabra!

  15. I have Never been to Cabramatta- next time I am in Sydney, I am determined to go.

  16. Hi Mademoiselle Delicieuse: Mm yes, gotta love that crunchy tripe :)

Hi Conor: Haha you must give it a try! Slimy tripe & tendons ftw!

Hi Amy: Me too. I like just the way that it is ;)

Hi Steph: Mmm tripe! We have to have another pho outing!

Hi John: Thanks! I love Cabra!

Hi Anna: Thank you, haha yeah it was pretty intense, but totally awesome! That’s exactly right, and sometimes I think it’s even better than the real thing (sometimes)!

Hi FFichiban: You have to get a move on!

Hi Simon: You have to get a move on too!

Hi Iron Chef Shellie: Hehe it is an acquired taste!

Hi Cath: Aww thanks so much :)

Hi Angie: Ahh I see. Yeah, maybe you’re too accustomed to it, to appreciate it! I love it cause I never have it at home!

Hi Ellie: It’s almost 2hours for me too! It’s not that far! You should really go again!

    Hi Thang: Thanks so much!!

Hi Rhonda: Me too! Haha, I’m lucky that I have a lot of selection in my hood whenever the cravings come ;)

Hi Gastronomygal: Yes, you must definitely check it out!
